SLA Embedded Librarians Caucus Update #4

Greetings Caucus members!

This is update #4 since the founding of the Embedded Librarians Caucus last spring. There are several positive developments to report this time.

  1. The video of our Dec. 15 webinar is now available on Vimeo. We ran into a problem with YouTube, so you can now watch the webinar at https://vimeo.com/156531306 . Thanks again to our webinar panelists, Rachael Altman, Nadine Anderson, Mia Breitkopf, Jamie Marie Keller-Aschenbach, and George Peckham-Rooney.
  2. Have you ever had a poster that marketed you and/or your embedded librarianship activities? Laura Williams and Nadine Anderson, from the Caucus Communications team, are starting a new Embedded Librarian poster series/gallery on our website, starting with their own posters next week. They would love for your posters to join our gallery, so please email your poster to Laura (l.williams2@hud.ac.uk) and Nadine (nfanders@umich.edu) and they will post it to our gallery. If you don’t have a poster (yet), perhaps this series will give you some ideas!
  3. Conference-goers take note! If you’re going to Philadelphia, be sure to attend the Embedded Librarians Caucus Knowledge Café. It’s scheduled for Monday June 13 from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. It’s on the conference planner so don’t forget to include it in your personal schedule. Come and meet up with other caucus members and interested embedded librarians, and share your successes and challenges as you explore common interests.
  4. I’m also planning a conference call  or webinar as a Caucus business meeting for late May. I hope this will give everyone a chance to participate, including those who can’t attend the annual conference. Watch for details soon.
  5. Good news! Since Jan. 1, Caucus membership has continued to rise, and now stands at 88. Thanks to everyone who has joined or renewed.

Please keep in touch! Follow us on our @SLAEmbedded Twitter account, post to this list or contact me at caucusadmin@embedded.sla.org or david.shumaker3@verizon.net  with your ideas and suggestions. I look forward to hearing from you.

Latest Update from David Shumaker

Greetings Caucus members!

This is #3 in our series to keep you up to date with what’s going on in the Embedded Librarians Caucus.

Since the previous update sent November 30, there have been a couple newsworthy developments:

  • Membership has grown from 81 to 83. Thank you all for supporting the caucus!
  • Our first webinar, “How to Get an Embedded Librarian Job”, was held on Dec. 15. It was a tremendous success with approximately 120 participants. Our panelists, Rachael Altman, Nadine Anderson, Mia Breitkopf, Jamie Marie Keller-Aschenbach, and George Peckham-Rooney, did a fantastic job.  In case you missed it, I wish I could point you to the recording so you could listen to it – but unfortunately when we posted the recording, the response was so great that we crashed our server. So, stay tuned while we get that straightened out and come up with an alternate hosting platform.

Currently we need help with two things:

  1. Our next webinar. There’s still time for us to put on another one before June if we act quickly. A couple ideas have been suggested. Both of them are great ideas, but maybe you have another one! Or perhaps you’d like to be a panelist for one. Email me to share your thoughts or volunteer. Here are the 2 ideas:
    1. Keeping your embedded librarian job: techniques for success over the long haul
    2. The hiring manager’s perspective: what information services managers look for in candidates
  2. We need to develop plans for our Caucus meeting at the Annual Conference next June in Philadelphia. If you have suggestions or would like to help organize this, please let me know. I’m thinking along the lines of a short business meeting, followed by an informal event where members and friends can get to know one another – what are your thoughts?

Last but not least, please keep in touch! Follow us on our @SLAEmbedded Twitter account, post to this list or contact me atcaucusadmin@embedded.sla.org or david.shumaker3@verizon.net  with your ideas and suggestions. I look forward to hearing from you.

This is #2 in our series to keep you up to date with what’s going on in the Embedded Librarians Caucus.

Since the previous update in early October, there have been several newsworthy developments:

  • Membership has grown from 67 to 81! Thank you all for supporting the caucus!
  • Our first webinar, “How to Get an Embedded Librarian Job”, was announced for Dec. 15, 1:00—2:30 p.m. US Eastern time. It will feature five Caucus members sharing their experiences and insights. Already, 244 people have signed up! Are you one of them? If not, you can still register at https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/616204068926469633
  • I filed our first annual Caucus report to SLA last week. It will be posted on our website in the near future. The annual report is required for us to get our SLA dues allotment and maintain our status with SLA.

Speaking of SLA, coming up we’ll need to develop plans for our Caucus meeting at the Annual Conference next June in Philadelphia. If you have suggestions or would like to help organize this, please let me know. I’m thinking along the lines of a short business meeting, followed by an informal event where members and friends can get to know one another – what are your thoughts?

Welcome to the Embedded Librarians Caucus!

Welcome to the brand new SLA Embedded Librarians Caucus!

Approved by the SLA Board in May 2015, the Embedded Librarians Caucus is the first organizational home in any librarian / information professional association anywhere for embedded librarians.

Embedded Librarianship has been a growing model for the delivery of information and knowledge services for the past decade or more. It is defined as a strategic and operational management model that emphasizes the development of close, collaborative working relationships between librarians and information user groups.  Embedded librarians share the mission and goals of the group, and focus on contributing to its success by the application of their information and knowledge-related competencies. The functions they perform are diverse. They encompass teaching, research and analysis, stewardship of document- and data repositories, and other information- and knowledge-related work.

Embedded librarianship is applicable to all types of organizations and subject domains. The literature includes extensive documentation of the roles played by embedded librarians in health sciences, law firms, for-profit and non-profit corporations, government agencies, higher education, and other organizational settings, both large and small, spanning the globe.

Our aims are to serve SLA members by providing a forum for those interested in the theory and practice of embedded librarianship to network, share successes and challenges, and develop the theory and practice of embedded librarianship. Our goals are to:

  • Provide opportunities for embedded librarians to share knowledge and questions
  • Advance the theory and practice of embedded librarianship, and keep members apprised of new knowledge
  • Enable members to increase their value to their organizations by the application of embedded librarianship principles
  • Attract new members to SLA who want to be associated with a leading community of embedded librarians.

Whether you’re an embedded librarian now, or have an interest in taking on this kind of role in the future, you’re welcome to browse our site, and I hope you’ll decide to join up by adding the caucus to your SLA membership.
